Kano Gov. cuts registration fees by 50% in state-owned tertiary institutions

In a recent meeting held by Kano State Governor, Engr Abba Kabir Yusuf, with the State Commissioner of Higher Education, Vice-Chancellors, Provosts, Chief of Staff, and Special Advisor on Higher Education, a significant decision was made to address the economic challenges faced by students. The outcome of the meeting resulted in a 50% reduction in registration fees across all state-owned tertiary institutions.
The Commissioner of Higher Education, Dr. Yusuf Kofarmata, shared the information in a briefing, stating that the governor was deeply concerned about the difficulties faced by students and the citizens of the state due to the economic degradation in the country.
Dr. Kofarmata highlighted that the state government had recently approved the payment of registration fees for 7,000 indigenous students in response to the registration hike caused by the removal of subsidies in the education sector nationwide.
The decision to slash registration fees by 50% was made after consultations with stakeholders and considering the economic hardships that were leading some students to consider withdrawing from their studies.

Governor Kabir Yusuf emphasized the importance of supporting the youth, who played a significant role in his success during the 2023 gubernatorial elections. In acknowledgment of their contributions, he approved the payment of registration fees for Bayero University students and reduced the registration fees for state institutions by 50%. Furthermore, he ensured the payment of NECO fees for all SS3 students across the state.
The governor expressed his commitment to doing even more for the youth of Kano, bringing joy and relief to many students.
Ismail Kenye, the president of the Student Union of Northwest University Kano, commended the government’s decision, stating that it was in line with the economic challenges they were facing. He thanked the state government for their support and assured them of the students’ full cooperation and support.
