Lagos Police Commissioner sounds alarm on surge in homemade firearms

The Commissioner of Police for Lagos State, Idowu Owohunwa, expressed deep concern about the alarming rise in the illegal production of AK-47 firearms and other weaponry, which poses a significant threat to the security of the state.
Speaking during the inauguration of the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) by Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, Owohunwa revealed an unsettling trend of growing local expertise in the production of firearms, including replicas of foreign-made pistols, AK-47s, and various assault rifles.
This surge in illegal firearm production, coupled with the looming menace of cultism, has created a severe security challenge.

Commissioner Owohunwa stated: “We are constantly grappling with the complex dynamics of land disputes that often blur the line between civil disagreements and criminal activities, a common issue in our state. Additionally, the persistent traffic congestion, exacerbated by ongoing road projects, notably the Lagos-Ibadan highway, has led to occasional incidents of traffic-related robberies.
“The overall crime landscape in the state is further compounded by the proliferation of illegal firearms and the rampant abuse and trafficking of illicit drugs. It is a daily occurrence for our vigilant officers to seize various types of weapons and narcotics at checkpoints, during raids on black spots, and throughout our operational efforts. These recoveries are consistently linked to the commission of crimes across the state.
“What is most troubling is the noticeable surge in local expertise in the production of a wide range of firearms, including replicas of foreign-made pistols, AK-47s, and other assault rifles.
“This disturbing trend, in combination with the menace of cultism, presents a grave threat to the security environment of Lagos State. Urgent and comprehensive action is required from all stakeholders, including government agencies and the citizens themselves, to support the efforts of the police in curbing this dangerous trend.
“In our response to these challenges, we are enhancing our collaborative efforts with agencies such as the Department of State Services, the military units stationed in the state, and other state and federal law enforcement and public safety agencies.
“Above all, we are implementing a problem-solving framework rooted in the policing principle of zero tolerance for crime. We employ advanced crime-mapping techniques and utilize crime statistics and intelligence analysis tools to guide our policing strategies.”
