Man receives 35 strokes of cane, six-month prison sentence for theft

Inuwa Ahmad, a 22-year-old man from Kaduna State, has received a dual sentence for stealing a cell phone and building materials valued at N130,000.
The Shari’a court handling the case ordered that Ahmad be subjected to 35 strokes of the cane and sentenced to six months in jail after he pleaded guilty to the theft.
Judge Malam Anass Khalifa reduced the sentence from the originally intended 50 strokes of cane, in the hope that it would serve as a lesson to Ahmad, discouraging him from future theft.

During the trial, the defendant appealed for leniency, explaining that he resorted to theft because the money he received from his brother, who had hired him for work, was insufficient to cover his daily expenses.
However, the prosecution counsel, Inspector Sambo Maigari, revealed that Ahmad had a history of repeated offenses.
