Meet Barrister Suleiman Hassan Gimba: A young lawyer making waves as an inspirational writer, author

In today’s interview, we are delighted to feature Barrister Suleiman Hassan Gimba, an incredible young person who excels as a writer, author, and corporate lawyer. Notably, in 2017, Barrister Gimba achieved the distinction of becoming the youngest lawyer in his field.
NP: Could you please share a brief history about yourself?
Suleiman: My name is Barrister Suleiman Hassan Gimba, and I was born on January 10, 1995, in the vibrant town of Potiskum. My early educational journey was quite diverse, as I attended Fecoet Demonstration Primary School in Potiskum, but my thirst for knowledge took me on a somewhat haphazard path. I had the opportunity to experience various educational institutions, including the prestigious Nigerian Military Academy Zaria, and Government Technical College Potiskum. Each of these institutions left a unique mark on my academic and personal development.
Eventually, I found my way back to Fecoet Demonstration Secondary School, where I completed my secondary education in 2011. These formative years played a overwhelming role in shaping my character and instilling in me a strong sense of determination to pursue my passions.
Subsequently, my academic journey led me to the reputable Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, where I embarked on a journey towards becoming a legal professional. It was during these years that I discovered my love for writing, a passion that had been sparked during my time in secondary school.
NP: What led you to embark on the writing endeavour?
Suleiman: My love for writing blossomed under the guidance of my dedicated literature teacher, Mallam Ahmad Maina, whose passion for the subject was contagious. He not only taught me the intricacies of literature but also encouraged me to explore my creative side through writing.
Additionally, my interest in storytelling was fueled by my avid consumption of novels, movies, and TV series, which broadened my imagination and deepened my understanding of storytelling techniques.
During my undergraduate days at Ahmadu Bello University, I ventured into the world of publishing, sharing my poetry in prominent newspapers such as Desert Herald and Leadership newspapers. This exposure not only gave me a sense of accomplishment but also encouraged me to pursue writing with even greater zeal.

NP: What challenges did you encounter in your writing profession?
Suleiman: Like any aspiring writer, I faced my fair share of challenges. Writing, especially in the beginning, does not always provide immediate financial stability. I came to realize that many writers struggle to make a living solely from their craft. Despite these challenges, I remained steadfast in my commitment to writing, viewing it as a passion rather than a primary income source.
NP: How did you manage your academic activities and writing while you were an undergraduate?
Suleiman: While navigating the demands of my legal studies, I temporarily set aside my writing pursuits. Yet, fate had other plans for me. During my 300-level at university, I met Hassana Umaru Maina, a fellow passionate writer. Her infectious enthusiasm reignited my own love for writing, and together, we began delving into poetry and prose, inspiring each other to express ourselves through words.
NP: What achievements have you made since you started writing?
Suleiman: Since the inception of my writing journey, I have had numerous achievements that have brought me immense pride and satisfaction. Writing my first story was a defining moment, as it connected me with diverse people, including fellow writers, whose feedback and encouragement further fueled my passion.
One of the most fundamental milestones in my writing career was the successful publication of my first book, a collection of 50 poems that I had diligently penned over the years. This achievement was a result to the hardwork required to bring a creative work to fruition.
In addition to my own creative endeavours, I established the Yobe Literary Society, an initiative aimed at promoting literature and writing in the Northeastern region of Nigeria. Through this platform, I organized several writing competitions that brought writers from various backgrounds together, fostering a sense of camaraderie and providing aspiring authors with an opportunity to showcase their talents.
NP: As a lawyer, how did you manage writing and working?
Suleiman: While my career as a lawyer dealing with property-related issues demands my attention, writing has remained an integral part of my life. It is through writing that I find solace, express my thoughts and emotions, and explore the limitless possibilities of storytelling. My legal profession and my writing endeavours complement each other, as both require precision in language and a deep understanding of human experiences.
NP: How did you feel when you published a book?
Suleiman: The publication of my book was a moment of fulfillment, propelling me to embark on new writing projects and refocus my efforts on creative expression. The positive reception of my book by readers has been heartwarming, and it has opened doors to connect with diverse audiences, inspiring some folks to explore their own writing journeys.
NP: I’m glad you find it inspiring! What led you to publish a book of your own?
Suleiman: One of the driving forces behind publishing my book was to change the narratives in the Northeastern region of Nigeria. I believe in empowering young people to tell their stories and avoid outsiders misrepresenting their experiences. Through my writing, I aim to unveil the beauty, resilience, and cultural richness of the region, thereby challenging stereotypes and fostering understanding.
NP: What should your readers expect from you in the near future?
Suleiman: Looking to the future, I am excited to share that I am currently working on a poetry collection, which I plan to publish either later this year or early next year. This new collection explore deeper into my thoughts, emotions, and reflections, offering readers a glimpse into the various facets of my life.
NP: What advice do you have for aspiring writers?
Suleiman: To aspiring writers, I offer the following advice: remain focused on your craft, hone your skills, and cultivate a strong reading culture. Reading widens one’s imagination, helps develop new ideas, and sharpens grammar and writing techniques. Surrounding yourselves with like-minded individuals who share your passion for writing can be immensely beneficial, as they will provide support, inspiration, and constructive feedback to help you grow in your writing journey.
