A 30-year-old man named Tum Joseph appeared before the Upper Customary Court in Kafanchan, Kaduna State on Tuesday on charges of stealing a mattress and clothes from his mother.

At the time, the complainant was taking care of her sick husband in the hospital when she received information that her son had taken away several items from their home.

The stolen items included a mattress, two containers of herbicide chemical, 10 yards of a wrapper, and some of her husband’s clothes.

The police, however, managed to recover the mattress during the course of their investigation. In addition to the theft, the defendant was also accused of insulting and using derogatory language towards his mother.

The prosecutor stated that the defendant’s actions violated sections 378, 76, and 270 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law.

Upon hearing the charges, Joseph pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor requested an adjournment to allow the police to present witnesses and gather evidence to support their case.

In the ruling, the presiding judge, Mr. George Gwani, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N20,000, and required a surety in the same amount, who must be his uncle.
