My take and viewpoint on ECOWAS/CEDEAO’s policies to Niger constitutional governance, by Kaka Bolori

The relationship between Nigeria and Niger involves a myriad of factors, encompassing diplomatic, political, and strategic considerations. President Tinubu might not be fully aware of these intricacies, and it’s crucial for him to be educated by someone well-versed in the strategic partnership between Nigeria and Niger. This complex relationship is deeply influenced by historical ties, shared values, and the ever-evolving dynamics of the region.

Our stance towards Niger is guided by a desire to uphold stability in the region and promote diplomatic avenues for conflict resolution. As we delve into the historical context, it becomes evident that the ties between Nigeria and Niger are steeped in a rich history of strong connections. These ties span various aspects, from political and economic cooperation to marital and cultural collaboration, culminating in a strategic alignment or partnership. This synergy signifies a remarkable level of cooperation, uniting our nations through shared interests in diplomacy, security, and regional stability.

Amidst the current landscape, a looming concern arises as Nigeria potentially contemplates involvement in a conflict or military intervention in Niger. Yet, our nation grapples with an abundance of uncertainty and challenges. Presently, a significant portion of the northern population struggles to afford two meals a day. The potential escalation of any crisis could precipitate grave repercussions for the region. A poignant adage reminds us that ‘a hungry man is an angry man.’ Given the heightened vulnerability and volatility of the country, it stands susceptible to crises.

Embarking on a conflict under these circumstances does not align with our best interests. Instead, a prudent course of action entails a thorough evaluation of the situation, coupled with a meticulous examination of available choices, before arriving at such a pivotal decision. Moreover, it is crucial that in our pursuit of stabilizing the Niger Republic, we do not inadvertently destabilise our own country. Balancing our priorities and safeguarding our nation’s well-being must remain paramount.

Our current reality compels us to address pressing domestic matters. From the devaluation of our currency to fluctuating fuel prices, soaring food costs, dwindling purchasing power, and an overall compromised security atmosphere, a multitude of issues demand our attention. While the topic of a constitutional government in Niger holds significance, our immediate focus must prioritize the effective management of internal affairs. The intricacies of democracy in Niger should be secondary to address the compelling challenges that affect our nation directly.

In conclusion, the imperative of diplomatic negotiations emerges as a compelling solution. By fostering dialogue, mediation, and cooperation, the Nigerian government, in partnership with ECOWAS and regional allies, can effectively guide Niger towards a peaceful restoration of constitutional governance. This collaborative approach not only addresses the immediate challenges but also signifies a proactive stance in tackling shared regional concerns.
