SERAP drags Akpabio to court over holiday allowances

President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, in the coming days will be issued a lawsuit by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) following his comments made on national television informing senators that the national assembly clerk will disburse money to their accounts for them to enjoy the holiday.

This, however generated heavy criticisms on Senator Akpabio by concerned Nigerians on social media when the video surfaced online.

“In order for us to enjoy our holidays, a token has been sent to our various accounts by the Clark of the National Assembly,” Akpabio said.

Perhaps Akpabio was unmindful that the session was being televised live and when he noticed he quickly withdrew the statement.

But, reacting to this, SERAP in a statement issued on Thursday on its X account, formerly known as Twitter, said Akpabio was insensitive to have uttered such comment despite the untold economic hardship that 70% of Nigerians are facing.

“We’re suing Senate President Godswill Akpabio over the alleged payments of “holiday allowances” by the Clerk of the National Assembly into the “various accounts” of senators while some 137 million poor Nigerians face severe economic hardship,” SERAP stated on Thursday.

Below are some reactions by Nigerians on the microblogging platform, X.

@Hmp2million, “This Akpabio will be the worse senate president in history . He has not shown any signs of being emotional for the hardship going on in Nigeria now.”

@pascaloz, “See our Presido’s bags. Our Oga de sleep for em office. You can’t tell me otherwise. With Peter in the Villa, how Akpabio Dem wan take get token for holiday enjoyment when the president himself no de go holiday? #Eyesonthejudiciary.”

@ugonmezi, “Why are we acting all suprise abt this disdainful remark by Akpabio in this austere period. This is a man who believes that wat money can’t do, more money can do it. While we are sufocating, our so called leaders are breathing from 33k ft container of oxygen.”

@celeejyk,” The drug Lord’s illegitimate govt is busy sharing money among demselves whilst d Nigerian masses are asked to kip sacrificing 4 a better tomorrow? We av sacrificed enough! Senator Akpabio nd his fellow rogues of senators must stp sharing our common wealth among demselves now!!!”

@chima_TeeY,” “When you have a criminal at head, criminality becomes brazen. Akpabio can’t hide the sharing of our borrowed money for them to go and enjoy anymore, while the poor languish.”

@EmodiMba, “I commend SP Akpabio sincerity, at least he said the truth knowingly or unknowingly.

It’s now left for those people deceiving themselves with, “there’ll be joy after this suffering” to make choices, because nothing like light for end of tunnel.

Them don seal the tunnel self.”
