Super Falcons coach Waldrum abandons team after elimination – Report

Super Falcons coach, Randy Waldrum, has abandoned the players in their hotel in Brisbane, Australia shortly after their elimination on Monday, August 7.

The team was knocked out of the FIFA Women’s World Cup after they lost 4-2 on penalties to the Lionesses of England in the Round of 16.

According to Prompt News, coach Waldrum left the team’s hotel few hours after the match to catch the next available flight back to the United States of America.

Sources revealed that the players and backroom staff were still asleep when the coach left the hotel.

Further details revealed that Waldrum, 66, left with the foreign players, including Deborah Abiodun, Ifeoma Onumonu, Jennifer Echegini and Esther Okoronkwo.

Other players who left with the coach are, Michelle Alozie, Toni Payne and Yewande Balogun.

The players left behind and other backroom staff are expected to head back to the country today, Wednesday.

Waldrum has expressed his desire to stay on as Super Falcons head coach despite face-off with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in the buildup to the World Cup.

The Super Falcons were the second African team to exit the tournament after South Africa were sent home following their 2-0 defeat to the Netherlands on Sunday.

The third team left in the tournament after the Super Falcons lost to the Lionesses of England was Morocco but the north African country who are debutant lacked the needed experience to say on as they were trashed with four unreplied goals by the French team on Tuesday.

Despite Super Falcons’ early exit from the competition they were commended for their gallant performance to match up against the hosts, Australia claiming a 3-2 victory.

The team also made history to have qualified for the next round of the tournament for the first time in their nine appearances.
