“We will do everything to ensure your businesses prosper” – Ag. CGC assures stakeholders

In a reassuring and productive visit to the Ogun II Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, the Acting Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, expressed his utmost commitment to supporting stakeholders and ensuring the prosperity of their businesses. The visit, which took place on Monday, 7th July 2023, was part of his ongoing efforts to familiarize himself with various commands across the country.
During his interaction with Excise Traders and Free Trade Zone Operators in Ogun State, Adeniyi emphasized that their operations are of the highest priority to the customs service. He stated, “I have deliberately made it a policy to prioritize and support your operations in our activities.” He further acknowledged their significance as critical stakeholders, as their activities contribute to the success and reporting of the customs service’s operations.

The Acting CGC assured the stakeholders that the customs officers are not always focused on strict law enforcement but also understand the underlying objectives and benefits of their entities. He highlighted that the government’s intention through these enterprises is to boost foreign exchange earnings for Nigeria, generate employment opportunities for Nigerians, and ultimately enhance the country’s economic development. Adeniyi stressed that various concessions and waivers have been granted to free zone operators to facilitate their operations.
During the meeting, the stakeholders congratulated Adeniyi on his appointment and took the opportunity to discuss their concerns and issues regarding the operations of the Free Trade Zones and excise-controlled factories. In response, the Acting CGC disclosed the formation of a committee comprising representatives from the enterprises, the Nigerian Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA), and the Oil and Gas Authority. This committee, working closely with representatives from his office, will address all the areas of concern raised by the stakeholders.
Expressing his gratitude for the warm reception and fruitful discussions, Adeniyi praised the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Ahmadu Shauibu, for the commendable achievements of the command. Comptroller Shauibu highlighted that since assuming office, they have successfully brought 18 factories under excise control, contributing significantly to local economic growth.
To conclude his visit, the Acting CGC undertook a comprehensive tour of the command’s facilities, gaining valuable insights into its operations and infrastructure. His visit reaffirmed his commitment to supporting stakeholders, fostering economic development, and ensuring the smooth functioning of customs operations in the region.
