Zamfara Ambush: Officer, 5 soldiers among 27 killed

In a tragic turn of events, Zamfara State witnessed a devastating ambush carried out by armed bandits that resulted in the loss of an officer, five soldiers, a policeman, and 20 vigilantes.

During a joint foot patrol operation aimed at eliminating bandits’ camps and enclaves, the brave vigilante members fought alongside the troops. However, the group encountered a fierce ambush, leaving them vulnerable to the ruthless attack.

The news of the casualties was confirmed by Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, in a statement titled “Bandits Sustain Casualties While Attacking Troops of FOB Kango on Patrol.”

He also mentioned that two soldiers are currently declared missing in action.

The horrifying incident occurred on July 24, 2023, when the bandits launched their assault on the troops of Sector 1 Forward Operating Base (FOB) Kango during a routine foot patrol.

The troops demonstrated their determination and bravery, managing to fend off the attack and inflict casualties on the bandits.

Tragically, the valiant troops suffered losses during the encounter. The fallen heroes include one officer, five soldiers, one Nigerian Police Force (NPF) personnel, and 20 vigilantes who had selflessly joined the mission to aid the troops.

The bodies of the deceased were tenderly laid to rest at Yerima Bakura Specialist Hospital in Gusau, Zamfara State.

In respect for the families’ privacy, specific details about the fallen heroes are being withheld until the completion of necessary administrative procedures for notification.

In light of the two missing soldiers, search and rescue operations are ongoing to locate and bring them back safely. The bandits’ threats of reprisal following their own losses have prompted authorities to bolster security at the FOB.

Despite the heart-wrenching setback, the brave troops remain resolute, gearing up for further offensive actions against the bandits, determined to restore peace and security in Zamfara State.
