Tribunal nullifies Kogi East Senatorial election, orders INEC to conduct rerun

The Election Petition Tribunal in Lokoja, Kogi State has reportedly nullified the Kogi East Senatorial election and ordered a rerun.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had previously declared Senator Jibrin Isah Echocho of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the election held on February 25, 2023.

The official results declared by INEC’s Returning Officer, Prof. Musa Ibrahim, in Idah, headquarters of the Kogi East Senatorial district, stated that Echocho scored 108,784 votes, surpassing Victor Adoji of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who garnered 81,867 votes.

However, Adoji contested the result, alleging widespread violence, voter suppression, and manipulation of the outcome.

Following the tribunal’s judgment on Tuesday, September 5, the election has been nullified, and INEC has been instructed to conduct a rerun.
