Burkina Faso security forces foil attempted coup against transitional government

The military government of Burkina Faso has announced that it thwarted a fresh coup attempt by some security and intelligence services on Tuesday, September 26.

The West African country’s transitional government stated on Wednesday that the public should be informed “that a coup attempt was foiled on September 26, 2023, by the Burkinabe intelligence and security services,” according to TRT Afrika.

The officers behind the attempted destabilization of the country have been arrested, and authorities have pledged to continue searching for other perpetrators. The government promised to provide more details on the new coup attempt in the coming days.

On Tuesday evening, hundreds of Burkinabe people took to the streets of Ouagadougou, the country’s capital, to show their support for the transitional government following reports of mutiny among the military hierarchy.

Captain Ibrahim Traore, the military junta leader of Burkina Faso, expressed his gratitude to his supporters in a tweet on Wednesday.

He then vowed to ensure that the transitional government remained safe despite adversity and various plots to prevent the country from achieving sovereignty.

In September 2022, Captain Traore led a coup in the country and became the new leader of Burkina Faso, overthrowing Paul Henri-Damiba, who became the country’s leader in January through a military coup.
