FRSC announces new impoundment rules, prohibits personnel from entering offenders’ vehicles

In a recent development, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), represented by Corps Marshal Dauda Biu, has clarified a misleading memo circulating regarding a directive issued to Commanding Officers.

The FRSC’s spokesperson, Bisi Kazeem, issued a statement in Abuja on Thursday to address the matter.

Mr. Kazeem clarified that the memo in question pertained to a directive issued to Commanding Officers, aiming to enhance orderliness and put an end to the practice of having patrol operatives ride in the vehicles of offenders during impoundment.

He emphasized that the original directive was issued in a memo dated September 12, 2023, with reference FRSC/HQ/OPS/94/VOLXVI/094. The memo was titled ‘Immediate Ban on Placing Staff in Offenders’ Vehicles for Escort During Impoundment.’

He clarified that the directive was not a complete ban on vehicle impoundment by the corps, as was initially interpreted.

Instead, it corrected a previous directive, now stated in paragraph III of the aforementioned memo, which banned vehicle impoundment.

To be precise, the Corps Marshal’s directive solely prohibited placing staff in offenders’ vehicles for escort during impoundment by patrol teams, regardless of any alleged traffic infractions. This rule takes immediate effect.

The FRSC expressed regret for any confusion caused by the earlier memo and wishes to inform the public that the current stance of the corps is as outlined in the corrected directive.
