ICIR launches bold initiative to tackle misinformation, promote media literacy in Nigeria
The International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR) has issued an open call for journalists to participate in its groundbreaking “Countering Misinformation and Promoting Media Literacy in Nigeria Project.”
This initiative, supported by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, Abuja, seeks to combat the widespread dissemination of misinformation in Nigeria while fostering media literacy and responsible information sharing among its citizens.
The ICIR, a non-profit, independent media organization, is committed to advancing good governance in Nigeria through robust investigative and data-driven reporting.
Over the past five years, the ICIR has worked diligently to empower journalists with the tools necessary for in-depth investigative reporting, ultimately enhancing accountability and improving service delivery to benefit Nigerian citizens, particularly at the sub-regional level.

The ICIR FactCheckHub, established in response to the information crisis during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, has emerged as one of Nigeria’s most trusted verification platforms. The organization is now poised to expand its reach, visibility, and impact throughout Nigeria.
For the “Countering Misinformation and Promoting Media Literacy” project, the ICIR plans to select 30 journalists representing various media organizations across Nigeria. Applications for this opportunity opened on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, and will remain open until Friday, September 22, 2023.
Selected journalists will not only receive training to enhance their fact-checking skills but will also be provided with financial support.
This support is designed to enable them to produce critical fact-checking content, contributing to responsible journalism and elevating the overall quality of information available to the Nigerian public.
Eligible candidates for this initiative should possess a minimum of two years’ experience in journalism, working in the realms of print, electronic, or online media.
Freelancers with a proven track record in critical fact-checking are also encouraged to apply. As part of their application, aspiring participants must provide evidence of fact-checking content they have published within the past 12 months.
Applications for this project must be submitted online through the provided link, and aspiring journalists are urged to review the stipulated eligibility criteria before applying.
