Kidnappers demand extra N200 million after receiving N13 million for abducted NYSC members

Story from Saleh INUWA, Kano

Kidnappers who abducted eight Akwa Ibom State graduates in Zamfara State have demanded an additional N200 million in ransom, despite already receiving N13 million from the victims’ families.

The victims were kidnapped on August 17 while en route to the National youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp in Sokoto State.

A brother of one of the victims, who requested anonymity, revealed to Vanguard on Wednesday that the abductors are now demanding N200 million to secure the release of the seven corps members and the Akwa Ibom Transport Company (AKTC) bus driver currently in their captivity.

The source expressed deep concern about how to raise such a substantial amount, saying, “We were taken aback when two parents, who have been in contact with the kidnappers since the incident, informed us that, even after delivering the remaining N8 million to complete the negotiated N13 million ransom, the kidnappers did not release our loved ones. Instead, they demanded an additional N200 million ransom.”

“We have already paid N13 million,” the source continued.

“Initially, we paid N5 million, followed by an additional N8 million to meet the N13 million ransom demand. Some parents had to sell their land, while others resorted to taking out loans to raise the funds. Unfortunately, we haven’t received any assistance from the government. Raising the initial N13 million was an immense challenge for us. So, the question now is, how can we possibly gather this new ransom of N200 million? We’ve purposely shielded our mother from this latest development, as we fear she won’t be able to bear the news. We are enduring immense hardship and feel utterly helpless.”
