NiMet forecasts heavy rainfall in FCT, 25 other states on Thursday
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued an alert to Nigerians regarding heavy rainfall expected to occur on Thursday, September 28 and Friday, September 29.
The agency has identified twenty-five states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as areas that may experience heavy rainfall, with the possibility of flash floods. Among the states predicted to be affected are Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Plateau, Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Niger, Nasarawa, Kogi, Enugu, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, and Abia.
Additionally, NiMet has forecasted moderate to heavy rainfall in Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ebonyi, Kwara, Benue States, and the FCT. Other parts of the country are expected to have very light rain or no rain at all.

NiMet has also warned about the potential risks associated with the heavy rainfall, including strong winds that could pose a threat to weak structures, trees, and masts.
The agency advises people in affected states to disconnect electrical appliances before the rain begins. NiMet cautions that the heavy rainfall may result in flash flooding, particularly in the areas listed.
In addition, the agency highlights the possibility of strong winds accompanying the rainfall, with the strongest winds expected in parts of Adamawa, Borno, Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kebbi. NiMet urges the public, especially drivers, to exercise caution and avoid driving through surface runoff waters, as they may have strong undercurrents.
The agency emphasizes the potential hazards such as slippery road surfaces and reduced visibility during the rain, which can disrupt road traffic. Choosing to avoid driving through surface water is advised as a safer option for everyone’s wellbeing.
