NNPP Leadership Crisis: Kwankwaso seeks constitution, logo changes

The leadership crisis within the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has taken an intriguing turn as Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso’s faction initiates moves to amend the party’s constitution and logo.

This decision to amend the constitution was confirmed during an exclusive interview with NNPP’s National Auditor, Ladipo Johnson.

The development follows the recent expulsion of NNPP’s presidential candidate by the faction led by Major Agbo.

The expulsion was based on allegations of anti-party activities and misappropriation of campaign funds, and it was officially announced by the factional National Publicity Secretary, Abdulsalam Abdulrasaq.

Abdulrasaq stated that the decision to expel Kwankwaso was reached after he failed to appear before the disciplinary panel to defend himself against the allegations.

This expulsion stirred disaffection within the party, leading to heated exchanges among prominent figures from various opposition camps.

Recent findings suggest that the Kwankwaso camp is subtly moving to amend the party’s logo and constitution, a move believed to be an attempt to weaken the influence of NNPP’s founder, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam. Johnson, who chaired the disciplinary committee responsible for expelling factional members, confirmed this development.

However, he clarified that this move wasn’t a direct response to the emergence of factions within NNPP.

Johnson explained: “No, it has nothing to do with any faction. It was something we had already discussed at the NEC. Unlike the Agbo faction, we are serious about it. Nevertheless, we haven’t changed the logo yet. We plan to open it up for our members to propose ideas.”

In response, Major Agbo, the acting National Chairman of the faction, acknowledged that they were aware of the subtle move. They believed it was an attempt to remove the founder’s immunity, as provided in the current constitution.

Agbo remarked, “Clearly, the proposed amendment to the constitution and the change in the logo were deliberate. It seems they suddenly realized that the man they are targeting (the founder) enjoys immunity under the current constitution. Hence, they are rushing to amend it.”
