Power supply returns after national grid failure
Story from Vincent CHIKAMSO, Abuja
In the early hours of Thursday, the national electricity grid experienced a significant collapse, leading to a substantial loss of power supply to distribution companies across the country. However, there’s good news as power supply has now been restored.
The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (Eko Electric) announced the restoration of power supply from the grid with a message to its valued customers: “Dear Valued Customer, we are pleased to inform you that power supply has been fully restored from the grid. We appreciate your patience during this outage.”
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) had initially confirmed the grid collapse and assured that efforts were underway to address the issue.

According to Ndidi Mbah, the General Manager of Public Affairs at TCN, “Grid restoration is in progress and has reached advanced stages. Power supply is now available in the West, North Central, and South regions, ensuring grid stability.”
TCN explained that the collapse occurred due to a fire incident on the Kanji/Jebba 330kV line 2.
They also emphasized that investigations were ongoing to prevent similar incidents in the future and to strengthen the grid’s reliability. TCN remained committed to ensuring grid stability despite the incident.
Several electricity distribution companies had also confirmed the grid collapse.
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Plc (EEDC) issued a notice to its customers, stating, “We regret to inform our valued customers about a total system collapse at 12:40 am on September 14, 2023. As a result, there is currently a loss of power supply across our network.”
EEDC noted that they were awaiting detailed information about the collapse and restoration of supply from the National Control Centre (NCC) in Osogbo.
The Eko Electricity Distribution Company similarly informed its customers about the grid collapse and assured them that they were in constant communication with the National Control Centre (NCC) in Osogbo, promising to provide updates as more information became available.
This sequence of events highlights the challenges faced by the national electricity grid but also demonstrates the industry’s determination to swiftly restore power supply and ensure stability for customers.
