Security forces enforce 24-hour curfew in Kano amidst political turmoil
A 24-hour curfew has been imposed in Kano State in the wake of a ruling by the election petitions tribunal that removed Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf from office.
The Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Usaini Gumel, personally signed a statement announcing the curfew.

He mentioned that a joint team of security forces has been deployed throughout the city to enforce the curfew.
“In accordance with the constitutional responsibilities of the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant internal security and law enforcement agencies to maintain law and order in the state, the Kano State Police Command has devised strategies for this purpose. We call on the good people of the state to cooperate and support these efforts.
“Kano State residents should be aware that combined security forces have been deployed to all corners of the state, including entry and exit points, to ensure strict compliance with the 24-hour curfew order. This order, as communicated by the State Government via Reference No: K/SEC/H/435/T.1/153 dated September 20, 2023, is effective from 6 p.m. on Wednesday, September 20th, to 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 21st, 2023.
“Violators will be arrested and subjected to the full force of the law.
“Lastly, I want to express my appreciation to all peace-loving people of the state and urge them to maintain law and order. It is in the best interest of all that we come together to ensure peace in the state,” he stated.
The state is currently gripped by apprehension following the tribunal’s decision that declared Nasir Yusuf Gawuna of the APC as the election winner.
Residents were observed hurriedly closing their shops and businesses, fearing potential attacks by unruly elements.
The state previously experienced incidents of looting, vandalism, and arson in March when Governor Yusuf was initially declared the election winner.
