Setting the Records Straight: Ambassador Damagum’s genuine commitment to the PDP, by Dr. Aminu Salihu Yakudima
Out of strong conviction, this is the second time I write to correct wrong impression and certain illusions about the Acting National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP), Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum and setting the record straight on some misrepresentation of facts on events and circumstances in the PDP.
Against this backdrop, I stumbled upon an article written by some politicians, which discusses Ambassador Umar Damagum’s style of leadership, his involvement and style of handling PDP related and other issues of tremendous interest that may have direct bearing with his personality and status.
While I appreciate their perspective, I would like to shed lights on a more balanced view of Umar Damagum’s contributions and enthusiasm to both the development of democracy and growth of the PDP over the years.
I do not want to bore the reader who may be interested in political antecedents of Umar Damagum, with his biography or his intention within the Nigerian political landscape, other than what was aforementioned.
Firstly, it’s essential to emphasize that Umar Damagum’s journey from a young businessman to a prominent figure within the PDP was not just about a meteoric rise, but a testament to his dedication and commitment to making a positive impact. His appointment as an Ambassador and subsequent positions within the party were earned through hard work, dedication, and a genuine desire to serve the good people of Yobe State, North East and Nigeria in general.
The concern about Damagum’s approach being overly mercantile might not fully capture his motivation. While political decisions might seem transactional at times, it’s worth noting that politics often involves compromise and negotiation. Damagum’s ability to bring different stakeholders together can be seen as a strength, rather than a weakness.
The complexities of modern politics require pragmatic decision-making, persuasion and good administration. Damagum’s experience in business might have equipped him with a unique perspective on effective problem-solving and crisis management.
The reference to the general presidential election raises valid points for discussion. However, it’s important to recognize that in any political party, diverse viewpoints and strategies exist. Damagum’s involvement in endorsing a candidate could have been based on careful considerations that may not be immediately apparent. Political decisions are multifaceted and can’t always be reduced to a singular narrative.
Even though, Umar Damagum’s limitations in the decision making process and implementation at that time were obvious, looking at his position as the Deputy National Chairman. He was appointed Acting National Chairman of the party only on Tuesday, 28th of March, 2023 after the party’s primary elections and general elections in the country.
Regarding Damagum’s continued influence within the party, it’s a sign of his ability to build alliances and maintain a broad support base. Leadership transitions are integral to any political party, and it’s possible that Damagum’s vision aligns with the values and aspirations of many stakeholders within the PDP. His leadership might be seen as a bridge between tradition and innovation, between young and old, between men and women in an effort to ensure the party remains relevant in changing times and in our unpredictable political terrain.

While it is crucial to address political concerns and foster healthy debate within any political party, it’s also important to acknowledge the positive changes and initiatives that leaders like Damagum have brought about.
The PDP’s historical legacy is a source of pride to all patriotic citizen in Nigeria, and its future lies in the hands of leaders who can navigate through the turbulence and complexities of the modern political landscape, while staying true to the party’s core values.
Finally, I must conclude by saying Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum is the youngest to assume an exalted position of a National Chairman in acting capacity of the biggest party in Nigeria. A party with a national outlook and concentration of serious politicians that was in government for several years and now as the main opposition.
I must say Umar Damagum is a multidimensional leader who has risen through the ranks based on his dedication, experience, and a genuine desire to contribute positively to sociopolitical development of Nigeria. While constructive criticism and genuine concerns are integral to a thriving democracy, it’s equally important to recognize the nuanced nature of political decision-making process and good leadership in Nigeria.
God save Nigeria.
