Tribunal rejects Peter Obi’s petition, affirms equal status of FCT in presidential elections

The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT), based in Abuja, has made a significant ruling, dismissing a petition that alleged a presidential candidate’s requirement to secure 25% of the votes cast in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for a victory declaration.

This development came during a ruling delivered on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, by the tribunal’s chairman, Justice Haruna Simon Tsammani.

Justice Tsammani emphasized that the FCT holds no special status and is equivalent to every other state in Nigeria.

This ruling stems from a petition filed by the Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, challenging the election victory of President Bola Tinubu.

Obi’s argument centered on the contention that Tinubu should be disqualified from the presidency since he failed to secure 25% of the votes in the FCT.
