University graduate attempts suicide over withheld results
In a distressing incident, a young man named Precious Ogbeide, a graduate of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, reportedly made an attempt on his own life. It is alleged that the university has refused to issue him his results since his graduation in 2018, which has caused him immense depression and frustration.
According to a report by PUNCH, several other students are also facing similar difficulties, with the inability to obtain their degree results despite spending five years at the institution. The students express their discontent, as the university had made promises to clear the backlog of results and settle the matter for those who were awaiting mobilization for the National Youth Service Corps scheme.

A source familiar with the incident shared details with the publication, stating that Ogbeide had reached a breaking point due to the ongoing ordeal. “I received a call around 3:30 pm on Monday, informing me that Ogbeinde had been rushed to the hospital. It was mentioned that he had been showing signs of depression, and they had tried to support him as much as they could,” said the source.
“The mother told me that he suddenly stood up with a bottle and smashed it on the floor. They explained it as a slip, but then he started piercing his neck and body with the broken pieces of glass. Thankfully, his relative present at the time managed to overpower him before he was rushed to the hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.”
Ogbeide’s frustration stemmed from the fact that he had been unable to present any results to his parents and family members after spending five years in school. Additionally, it affected his job prospects, as prospective employers continually asked for his certificate, which he couldn’t provide. Every time he sought assistance in securing a job, he would be told to wait for his results. The mounting sense of hopelessness and the perception that his future was on hold proved overwhelming for him.
The Head of Corporate Communications and Protocol at the university, Mike Aladenika, acknowledged the certificate and result issues faced by some students. He suggested that these students might have encountered difficulties with certain courses during their time in school.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the distressing consequences that delays in issuing results can have on the mental health and overall well-being of students. It is crucial for educational institutions to address such matters promptly and ensure that students receive the support they need.
