Former Niger President foiled in escape plot to Nigeria

Niger’s military junta revealed today that it had thwarted an attempt by former President Mohamed Bazoum to flee to neighbouring Nigeria.

Bazoum was ousted from power in a coup in July, and the interim authorities said that he had planned to escape with the aid of accomplices within the security forces.

The plan involved driving to the outskirts of the capital, Niamey, to board a helicopter bound for Nigeria.

“The strong reaction of the defence and security forces made it possible to foil this plan to destabilize our country,” a military spokesman said on national television.

Bazoum’s removal from power was prompted by the worsening security situation in Niger, which has seen an increase in terrorist attacks by Islamist militants.

The military junta has promised to restore order and stability to the country.

However, Bazoum’s supporters have raised concerns about his treatment in custody, with reports suggesting that he does not have access to basic amenities such as running water, electricity, and fresh food.

Western countries have criticized the military regime for its handling of the situation.

The foiling of Bazoum’s escape plot is the latest twist in the ongoing political turmoil in Niger, as the military junta seeks to maintain control and restore order amidst a volatile security situation.
