Dominican Sisters, Medishare grant scholarships to 20 girls in Bauchi

The Dominican Sisters, in collaboration with Medishare, have granted partial scholarships to 20 pupils of Our Lady’s Nursery Primary and Secondary School (OLNPSS) in Bauchi State.
The move is aimed at cushioning the harsh economic situation faced by parents who are struggling financially to pay for their children’s education.
The scholarship was granted for the 2023/2024 academic session and targets parents who want their children to receive sound education but are unable to pay for it.
OLNPSS is owned by the Catholic Diocese of Bauchi and has been managed by the Dominican Sisters for several years.
The administrator and principal of OLNPSS, Rev. Sr Joy Okocha, spoke with NCN and explained that when the Dominican Sisters took over the management of the school, they discovered that many parents were struggling to pay tuition fees.

She said: “Working in OLNPSS, I see that many of our pupils and students will need assistance because of the situation of the country, which is not palatable. It is unbearable and parents are really struggling.
“We just thought it wise that we should meet one or two Persons that could help knowing that this is the northern part of the country and the girl child is vulnerable, there are some of them who just got married at a tender age.
“So these people that we approached from Medishare saw it wise enough that they could be generous and be of assistance to help some the pupils.
“So they requested for the girlchild that is why the scholarship is going to the female pupils in the basic section only. They were able to give us 300,000 just to help.”
Sr Okocha further explained that there were no special criteria for choosing the beneficiaries adding that vulnerable pupils both Christians and Muslims were granted the scholarship.
“There is no special criteria. First, we look at our Catholic fold which can benefit, then we also extend to other Christians and Muslims. It encompasses both Christians and Muslims.”
She called on the parents to pray for benefactors and benefactresses for the scholarship to continue.
“They have paid for a full session, we don’t know the duration of years they are willing to pay but we pray that the benefactors and benefactresses continue with the scholarship.
“What we are just asking is that the parents of the beneficiaries accompany these people with their prayers so that they can continue because a pupil can be seen through her primary stage.”
