How EFCC recovered 1.3bn from Dankwambo – Gombe Governor

Story from Saleh INUWA, Kano

Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has revealed that with the assistance of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), his administration has successfully recovered N1.3 billion from former Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo.

The recovery comes after an investigation into allegations of fund misappropriation during Dankwambo’s tenure.

Governor Yahaya made the announcement during the swearing-in ceremony of newly appointed commissioners, Permanent Secretaries, and the Head of Civil Service in Gombe.

He emphasized that his administration inherited a state burdened with debt, including significant unpaid pensions and gratuities.

Governor Yahaya stated, “We have cleared over 7.9 billion naira in gratuity obligations inherited from the previous administration, ensured prompt payment of pensions, and implemented the new minimum wage at the state level since February 2020. Now, thanks to the EFCC, we have successfully recovered N1.3 billion from Dankwambo. These funds will be utilized to continue addressing outstanding pension and gratuity payments for our retired workers.”

He further emphasized his administration’s commitment to upholding accountability, transparency, and holding officials responsible to discourage future corruption and promote good governance practices. The governor assured that pension, gratuities, and workers’ welfare are of utmost importance to his administration. He stated, “To mitigate the economic impact of the recent removal of fuel subsidy, we have approved a payment of 10,000 naira to all workers across the board until the new national minimum wage, currently being negotiated between the federal government and labor stakeholders, is determined.”

Governor Yahaya also highlighted the implementation of promotions and other welfare packages with full financial benefits. He called on everyone in the state to support his administration in their efforts to build a brighter future that aligns with the dreams and aspirations of the state’s founding fathers and its people.
