Kaduna Govt shuts Al-Azhar Academy in Zaria after student’s fatal beating

The Kaduna State Schools Quality Assurance Authority (KSSQAA) has taken decisive action by sealing Al-Azhar Academy in Zaria following the tragic death of a JSS 3 student, 19-year-old Marwan Sambo.

He lost his life due to severe beatings and corporal punishment administered by some teachers for his absenteeism.

Dr. Usman Abubakar, the Director General of KSSQAA, issued a statement on Sunday in Kaduna, announcing that the state’s Ministry of Education, on behalf of the government, had initiated a fact-finding mission to investigate the incident.

Their visit to Zaria aimed to piece together the sequence of events, starting from Al-Azhar Academy where the incident occurred, extending to the victim’s home, offering condolences to the grieving family, and speaking with some of the victim’s schoolmates.

Mr. Abubakar further mentioned that the KSSQAA team visited the Divisional Police Headquarters in Zaria City, where the school principal and vice-principal were detained.

The team also went to Hajiya Gambo Sawaba General Hospital, Zaria, where the victim was officially confirmed as deceased. Finally, the team visited the graveyard where the victim was laid to rest, and they observed a freshly dug grave.

The DG emphasized that the State Government, led by Governor Uba Sani, is committed to ensuring a safe and just learning environment, promising equity and justice for all.

In light of this commitment, he urged the general public to remain calm and law-abiding while investigations continued to ensure that justice would be served.

As an interim measure, in accordance with the provisions of its Establishment Act (amended in 2015), the KSSQAA has temporarily closed down Al-Azhar Academy in Zaria.

The school premises will remain sealed pending the outcomes of the investigation.
