Kidnappers release 4 Nasarawa Varsity students after ransom payment

Four kidnapped students of the Nasarawa State University have regained their freedom after payment of an undisclosed ransom.

Rahila Hanya (SLT 100 level), Josephine Gershon (Computer Science 100 level), Rosemary Samuel (Business Administration 100 level) and Goodness Samuel (Geography 100 level) were abducted from their off-campus residence near Angwan Kare after BCG at about 10:30 pm.

The students were released after money was given to their captors and are currently at 177 Guards Battalion Headquarters in Keffi.

Muhammed Sakilu Muhammed, Secretary General of the Nasarawa State Youths Forum for Advocacy, in a statement, confirmed the release of the student and ransom payment.

He said: “We are pleased to inform you that the four students from Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), who were kidnapped have been reportedly released today. This development follows the payment of an undisclosed ransom.”

The Nasarawa State Police Command, which confirmed the abduction of the students, had told journalists on Tuesday that a manhunt was launched in collaboration with the military to rescue the victims.

After the abduction, the assailants demanded the sum of N80 million as ransom for the release of the four students from captivity.

“The kidnappers have contacted appropriate persons and have demanded for the sum of N80 million for the release of the students.

“The N80 million is a cumulative amount for all the four students. What it means is that they want N20 million for each student,” an anonymous source disclosed.

“We just got the information that the students are no longer with the kidnappers as they have been released this afternoon,” the source confirmed.
