Man sentenced to life imprisonment for attacking girlfriend with acid

In a shocking case, Jide Afolayan Sunday, 33, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by Justice Blessing Egwu of a High Court in Calabar, Cross River State.

Sunday was found guilty of attempted murder for bathing his girlfriend, Glory Sylvester Ita, with acid after she refused to marry him. The judge also ordered Sunday to pay N10 million as compensation for the victim’s surgery.

During the trial, it was revealed that Sunday had planned the horrifying attack on Ita. He poured acid on her from head to abdomen, causing severe burns to her ear, breast, finger, and other parts of her body. He even attempted to push her into a pool to drown.

The prosecutor explained that the incident occurred after a breakup when Ita was invited to a hotel by Sunday. During their argument, he resorted to this heinous act of violence in an attempt to kill her.

Despite Sunday’s denial and his false claims that Ita was the one who attacked him, the evidence overwhelmingly supported Ita’s status as the victim.

Sunday has been in police custody for several months and has now been sentenced to life imprisonment, where he will serve his time at the Calabar Medium Security Custodial Centre.

Justice Egwu emphasized that the prosecution successfully proved the charge of attempted murder and held Sunday accountable for his heinous actions.
