NCS showcases technological advancements at 2023 WCO conference in Vietnam

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) delegation, led by Acting Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, made a significant impact at the World Customs Organization (WCO) Technology Conference and Exhibition held in Hanoi, Vietnam from 10th to 12th October 2023.
The event witnessed the participation of twelve delegates from the Nigeria Customs Service, along with representatives from the trade modernization project and private sector.
The conference kicked off with presentations highlighting Vietnam’s thriving economy, setting the stage for a series of engaging discussions.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Kunio Mikuriya, the Secretary General of the WCO, emphasized the pivotal role of technology in supporting customs administrations worldwide.
During the conference, the Acting CGC highlighted the importance of the WCO Technology Conference as a platform for fostering collaboration, exchanging insights, and showcasing the effective integration of technology in customs operations.
Furthermore, he expressed enthusiasm for the advanced technological solutions showcased at the event, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, non-intrusive technology, and data analytics, which offer novel approaches to solving customs-related challenges.
Adeniyi firmly believes that adopting these technological advancements will revolutionize customs operations in Nigeria, enhancing trade facilitation and revenue generation. He expressed his commitment to initiating the adoption processes in the country.
One notable aspect of the conference was the breakout sessions, addressing contemporary challenges and innovative solutions across various areas. Chief Superintendent of Customs Oluwabukola Omoniyi, a Nigerian delegate, actively participated in a discussion on gender equality.
ACG Kikelomo Adeola, the Assistant Comptroller-General in charge of ICT/Modernization, also attended the conference and stressed the importance of embracing e-commerce processes. She highlighted the significance of automation and an AI-driven approach to improving customs operations.
Dr. Jummai-Umar Ajijola, the Managing Director of the Trade Modernization Project Limited, emphasized the strong partnership between the Nigeria Customs Service and the Trade Modernization Project. Their alignment aims at achieving the seamless automation of customs processes and procedures in Nigeria.
The conference’s theme, “Embracing the Digital Age: Leveraging Technology, Fostering Innovation, and Nurturing the Next Generation of Customs Professionals,” underlined the crucial role of technology and continuous development in the customs field.
