UNIMAID Mass Communication students discuss career prospects with media professionals

In honor of Media and Information Literacy Day 2023, the Department of Mass Communication at the University of Maiduguri organized a gathering of media professionals to engage in an enlightening discussion with students. The event, held at the Muhammadu Buhari Business School’s Nur Alkali Hall and led by Miss Patience Gonsis, was part of the department’s Student Week celebration.
Professor Nuhu Gapsiso, a lecturer from the department, opened the event by emphasizing the importance of Media and Information Literacy Day. He urged students to reflect on and celebrate media advancements while also taking responsibility for combating disinformation and hate messaging prevalent in the digital realm.

Abdulhamid Al-Gazali, Editor-in-Chief of YEN NG, shared valuable insights on succeeding in a rapidly evolving media industry. He underscored the need for students to adapt to the changing landscape and emphasized creativity, credibility, and diligence as essential traits for success. Al-Gazali also encouraged students to explore entrepreneurial opportunities, citing his own experience in establishing YEN NG.
Mr. Dauda Iliya, Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Borno State and an alumnus of the department, shared his personal experiences of combining studies with hands-on practice. He emphasized the value of humility and continuous learning in one’s journey towards success.
Miss Zainab Yetunde, a freelancer, introduced students to IJNet, a digital platform offering various training, grants, and fellowship opportunities. Dr. Sharafa Dauda, a department lecturer, emphasized the importance of lifelong learning in the industry.
The esteemed guests and speakers were formally acknowledged by Dr. Rahila Jibrin, a department lecturer and trusted adviser to the students’ union, in appreciation of their invaluable contributions.
The MACOSA Week, an annual tradition, brings students from the department together for a week of activities aimed at facilitating learning, interaction, and entertainment.
