‘Mummy calm down’ boy’s father in police custody over mother’s suicide

The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of the husband of Toluige Olokoobi, the mother of the popular “mummy calm down” boy who tragically committed suicide earlier this week.

Olokoobi and her son, Oreofeoluwa Lawal-Babalola, caught the attention of Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu after the boy’s video begging his mum saying, “mummy be calming down” which went viral in 2020.

An individual, who claimed to be present at the scene of the incident, was the first to break the news of Mrs. Olokoobi’s death on Monday on the platform X formerly known as Twitter.

“The woman in the viral ‘mummy calm down’ video has just committed suicide here in Benin. She refused to speak to anyone about her problems. She left three kids for her husband including the popular mummy calm down boy.”

Witnesses disclosed that the deceased, who worked as a medicine distributor, hanged herself in the presence of her one-year-old son.

The spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the arrest of the deceased’s husband during a press briefing in Benin on Friday.

“He came home from the market when he saw his wife hanging with rope on her neck. He alerted the neighbours who followed him to the hospital where she was confirmed dead.

“He’s still with the police and will soon be transferred to the State CID for further investigation,” the spokesman added.
