Meet Aishatu Ibrahim K. Bura: The presidential contestant NAWOJ

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) was founded with the mission of enhancing women’s access and leadership in the media. Currently, amid its presidential campaign, Aisha K Bura stands out as one of the most promising candidate among the two contestants.

Born in the late 60s in Borno State, North East Nigeria, Aishatu Ibrahim K. Bura is a devoted civil servant and journalist with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication and over three decades of experience.

Professional Background: Aisha has served in various public sector roles, including Information Attaché positions in ministries such as Women’s Affairs and Social Development, Budget and Planning, State Universal Primary Education Board, State Ministry of Housing and Energy, and the Ministry of Health and Health Management Board. She also served as Press Secretary to the former Governor’s Wife and held roles at the Borno State Liaison Office in Kaduna and later Abuja.  As a member of several Non-Governmental Organizations, Aisha actively engages in advocacy on societal and humanitarian issues, particularly focusing on Persons of Concern (POCs), including Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVCs), victims of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (GBV), and Polio Eradication Awareness Campaign.

Educational Background: Aisha’s educational journey includes attending Galdimare Primary School in Biu, the American International School of Islamabad, Pakistan, Armitage High School in The Gambia, Saint Augustine’s High School in The Gambia, and the University of Maiduguri. She obtained her B.A. in Mass Communication in 1989.

Work Experience: Her extensive work experience spans roles such as National Youth Service Corps at Borno Radio Television, Press Secretary, Information Officer in various ministries, and more, showcasing a diverse and accomplished career.

Leadership and Union Activities:

Aisha has held various positions in the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), including Secretary of NUJ Borno State Council and Vice-President of NUJ North-East.

Workshops and Conferences: She has been an active participant in international conferences, including the IFJ Congress in Greece and Spain, as well as serving as a facilitator at a meeting on Steering Youths From Violent Extremism at Harvard University.

Languages Spoken: Aisha is proficient in English, French, Hausa, Babur/Bura, Kanuri, and Wolof.
