Appeal Court confirms typographical error in Kano governorship election judgment
The Chief Registrar of the Court of Appeal, Umar Bangari, has addressed the concerns surrounding the judgment delivered by the court on the Kano Governorship Election dispute.
In response, Bangari clarified that the discrepancy in the judgment was a typographical error that did not invalidate or alter the court’s findings and conclusions.
Assuring Nigerians, the chief registrar stated that the error would be rectified once formal applications from the involved parties were submitted.

He referenced Order 23 Rule 4 of the Court of Appeal Handbook, which grants the court the authority to rectify any clerical error upon the court’s or any involved party’s detection.
Bangari emphasized that despite speculations, the court’s judgment remained valid. The judgment had upheld the decision of the Kano State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which nullified the election of Kabir Yusuf of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) as the winner of the March 18 Governorship Election.
The appellate court recently overturned the victories of three governors who were declared winners by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the March 2023 poll. Notably, all three governors belonged to opposition parties.
In Zamfara, the appellate court removed Governor Dauda Lawal of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after deeming the election inconclusive nearly eight months later.
The court instructed INEC to conduct a new election in three local government areas of the state, with PDP’s Lawal and APC’s Bello Matawalle being the major contenders.
Additionally, the appellate court also nullified the victory of PDP’s Caleb Mutfwang in Plateau State, directing INEC to issue a Certificate of Return to the APC’s Nentawe Goshwe.
The court found that the party had violated the court order mandating a valid congress in the state’s 17 local government areas.
