Court sends ex-CBN Governor Emefiele to Kuje prison

A Federal High Court in Abuja presided upon by Justice Hamza Muazu has ordered the remand of Godwin Emefiele, former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), in Kuje Correctional facility pending ruling on his bail application.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had arraigned the former bank chief on a six-count amended charge.

Mathew Burkaa, SAN, counsel to the ex-CBN Governor had moved the application for his bail but Rotimi Oyedepo, the EFCC counsel, opposed on behalf of the Federal Government.

After listening to arguments, Justice Muazu said he needed a little time to study the exhibits supplied by Emefiele to support his request for bail.

He thereafter adjourned the case till November 22, 2023.

Neptune Prime reports that in June, Emefiele was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) immediately after he was suspended from office by President Bola Tinubu.

Since then, Emefiele has reached a plea bargain with the federal government, agreeing to return N50 billion that he allegedly embezzled.

However, immediately he was released by the DSS, Godwin Emefiele was taken into the custody of the EFCC.

Security sources revealed that the Presidency instructed the EFCC to assume control of the case against him, which involves allegations of terrorism financing and fraud.
