EFCC nabs couple over N2.7 billion fraud


In a recent development, the Lagos Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) brought charges against Oriyomi Idowu and Ruth Idowu in front of Justice Mojisola Dada of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos. They were arraigned on a series of a (Two Billion, Seven Hundred and Fifty-Seven Million, One Hundred and Eighty-Eight Naira Only).

The couple, as well as entities related to Ruth Idowu, including Food Commodity Processing Enterprise, Bonway Food Processing Company Limited, Samee Idowu Company Limited, and Farmex Integrated Companies Limited, faced the charges together.

The prosecution presented evidence alleging that the defendants wrongfully converted funds and dishonestly retained significant sums of money in their bank accounts that were fraudulently obtained from Creditpro Business Support Services.

During the hearing, the defendants pleaded “not guilty” to the charges. The prosecution counsel subsequently requested a trial date and the remand of the defendants at a Correctional Facility.

While the defendants’ legal representatives sought bail and a short adjournment for the hearing and determination of the bail application, the prosecution objected, citing the overcrowding of the EFCC holding facility and insisted that the appropriate place for the defendants following arraignment was a Correctional Centre.

Justice Mojisola Dada adjourned the matter till December 15, 2023, and ordered that the defendants be remanded at the Correctional Centre “pending hearing and determination of their bail applications.”
