FG suspends OAUTH Acting Director over job racketeering scandal

The Federal Government has announced the suspension of Mr. Balogun Tajudeen, the Acting Director, Admin, Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, Osun state, over his alleged involvement in a job racketeering saga within the institution.

In a statement released by the Director of Information, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Ms Patricia Deworitshe, it was revealed that the former Chief Medical Director (CMD), Dr. Owojuyigbe Olumuyiwa, who was appointed in an acting capacity in March and was also involved in the saga, has absconded from his duty post since July.

The ministry addressed the unrest within the institution which stemmed from an alleged job racketeering/over-employment saga under the former CMD, Dr. Olumuyiwa, who employed over 1,973 staff against the approved 450 vacancies waiver granted in the 2022 employment by the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF).

Deworitshe highlighted that “an investigative panel discovered that the hospital had recruited 2,423 staff instead of the approved 450, exceeding the waiver by 1,973 staff members”.

Furthermore, “the report revealed that the recruited staff lacked the requisite academic and professional certificates, as well as evidence of National Youth Service Corps certificates”.

The statement also emphasized the imbalance in the staff ratio, with 3,034 clinical staff and 4,245 non-clinical staff, which deviates from the recommended 3:1 ratio.

The suspension of Mr. Balogun Tajudeen and the involvement of the Federal Government aim to address the issues of job racketeering and over-employment at the institution, restoring integrity and adherence to extant rules and regulations.
