If you take my base, I’m politically irrelevant – Wike speaks on crisis in Rivers
The Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has entered the fray concerning the ongoing crisis in Rivers State, which revolves around the potential impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara in the oil-rich state.
In a meeting with South-South leaders at his office, Wike, a former Governor of Rivers State, underscored the critical importance of maintaining his political base to sustain his political relevance.

Wike emphasized that his political relevance hinges on retaining his base, and he remains unperturbed by any attempts to tarnish his reputation. He firmly insisted that the right course of action must be followed.
“All of us want to be politically relevant; all of us want to maintain our political structure,” stated the minister.
“Is it not your political structure? Will you allow anybody to just cut you out immediately? Everybody has a base. If you take my base, am I not politically irrelevant?”
The rift between Wike and Fubara has escalated, driven by the threat of impeachment by the State Assembly. Some have accused Wike of being the mastermind behind the impeachment plot. Recent events, including a fire at the Rivers Assembly Complex and the removal of principal officers with gunshots ringing out, have further heightened tensions.
Both Wike and Fubara belong to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Wike is confident that internal conflicts, not ethnic issues, will be resolved using the party’s mechanisms.
“In politics, there are a lot of internal wranglings,” Wike acknowledged. “But to come out and say ‘Oh, they want to do this against me, it will not work.’ I had every power then to say where this thing is going. So, when things are wrong, you ask questions. It is a party affair. The party knows how they resolve their own mechanism, it is not an ethnic affair.”
Wike concluded, “Our party is coming to it, that is what I will say. Every politician has his own interest.”
