Niger’s Junta seeks relief from sanctions imposed by neighbors, alleges economic hardship
Niger’s junta has officially requested the West Africa regional court to lift the sanctions imposed by neighboring countries and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) following the coup that ousted the democratically elected president in July.
The junta’s lawyers presented their case in Abuja, Nigeria, highlighting the severe impact of the sanctions on various sectors of Nigerien society, resulting in significant economic hardship.

Since the coup, ECOWAS and countries such as the United States have enforced sanctions on Niger, including border closures and the suspension of financial transactions.
The junta has asked the court to ease the sanctions temporarily until a final judgment is reached. In response, ECOWAS opposed the request, arguing that the junta lacks recognition under the bloc’s protocol.
The court adjourned the proceedings until December 7 for further deliberation.
