Teenage secondary school student confesses to killing FUTMinna lecturer

Story from Hamzat Ibrahim ABAGA

The Niger State Police Command has apprehended a 14-year-old girl named Joy Afekafe over the tragic murder of Dr. Fumilola Adefolalu, a lecturer at the Federal University of Technology in Minna, Niger State capital.

The murder of the lecturer took place on Saturday, 28th October, and Joy, while being paraded at the Bosso Police Station in Minna, confessed to her involvement in the crime.

According to Joy, she visited the residence of the deceased with two of her classmates, Walex and Smart. Initially, the intention was to confront and physically assault the late lecturer as an act of retaliation for being sent away.

However, during the confrontation, they realised that the lecturer intended to report their actions once they left. This revelation allegedly led them to make the grim decision to take her life.

Joy, an SS 2 student at Day Secondary School, Gidan Kuka, revealed that Smart and Walex initially struck the deceased with a stool before repeatedly stabbing her with knives until she succumbed to her injuries.

Further details provided by Joy shed light on the dynamics between her and the late lecturer. Apparently, Joy had been residing with the deceased for three weeks, with the expectation that she would sponsor her education.

However, due to Joy’s misconduct, the lecturer decided to ask her to leave, ultimately severing their connection.

She stated, “It was Walex who said that she would recognise us if we left her alive, so they started stabbing her with the knife we brought, I then struggled with the knife with them which made Smart enter her kitchen and take a knife there and they continued stabbing her.

“They stabbed her in her stomach, her hands, her legs and she was just shouting Jesus, Jesus. After all that, they took her phone and laptop and her car battery before we left the house in the motorcycle we came in,” she revealed.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abiodun Wasiu, while parading the suspect, announced that the police are actively pursuing Joy’s accomplices Walex and Smart.

He said investigation is currently underway, and the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further in-depth inquiry and subsequent legal proceedings.
