Yobe Governor’s Convoy: Boko Haram ambush claims life of police officer, injures 7

Story from Sa’adatu Maina, Damaturu

The Boko Haram terrorists who targeted the security convoy of Yobe State Governor, Honourable Mai Mala Buni’s returning to Damaturu from Maiduguri have claimed the life of Police Corporal Maina Yusuf Ibrahim, Neptune Prime can confirm .

According to reports, seven other security details were injured.

However, in an interview with our reporter, the Director General of Media and Press Affairs to Governor Buni, Mohammed Mamman, who confirmed the incident, insisted that only three security personnel were wounded.

“The wounded individuals”, according to him, “are responding positively to treatment”.

Sources revealed that the convoy’s security vehicles came under fire on the troubled Jakana–Mainok expressway. “The troops leading the convoy, equipped with an MRAP, a Gun Truck, and a vehicle carrying the Police and DSS, were targeted and they responded with heavy fire, forcing the terrorists to retreat.”

Neptune Prime gathered from a source who craved for anonymity that the Boko Haram elements deliberately ambushed the convoy by laying a trailer vehicle along the route, making passage so narrow that cars must leave the main road and drive through slowly.

The source said the Boko Haramists opened fire on the convoy from both sides at that narrow pass to which “we returned fire”, he said.

Unfortunately, one police officer paid the ultimate sacrifice, while two soldiers, a driver, and four policemen sustained injuries.

The security operatives safely returned to Damaturu, and the wounded personnel, along with the driver, were evacuated to the state’s specialist hospital for treatment.

Neptune Prime confirms from Police Inspector Audu Ibrahim, a brother to the deceased that the late corporal would be late to rest in Damaturu today after funeral prayers to be held at the Yobe Central Mosque at 1:00 pm today.
