12 killed, others injured in fresh herdsmen attacks on Benue communities

Gunmen have carried out brutal attacks in the communities of Anyiin, Ayilamo, Iorza, and Gbeji in Benue State, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least 12 individuals and leaving several others injured.

These attacks, suspected to be perpetrated by Fulani herdsmen, began without provocation last Monday and continued until Sunday, according to eyewitnesses.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the series of attacks, which commenced with the killing of three innocent victims, persisted over the following days, claiming the lives of nine more individuals.

The assailants reportedly invaded residences, along with blocking roads in broad daylight, instilling fear and causing harm to the residents.

Furthermore, they reportedly extorted money from the helpless villagers during these harrowing incidents.

A concerned eyewitness, speaking on condition of anonymity, emphasised the urgent need for the Benue State Government to provide security and protection for the vulnerable people of Anyiin and surrounding areas, who are enduring sustained attacks.

Additionally, the eyewitness highlighted that the assailants have been conducting these violent actions on a daily basis over the past two weeks, with little intervention from security forces.

In response to the distressing situation, the Benue State Police Command Spokesperson, SP Sewuese Anene, confirmed the attacks and assured the public that security personnel have been deployed to restore calm in the affected communities.

The spokesperson urged the impacted individuals to remain composed amid this challenging time.
