Nursing mother, baby missing as boat capsizes in Adamawa village

A boat carrying a minimum of 5 passengers, has capsized in Gamadio, a community in the Numan Local Government Area of Adamawa State, resulting in the death of a nursing mother and her baby.

However, rescuers have saved three individuals from the river mishap that unfolded in Gamadio community on Monday, December 11, 2023.

During a fact-finding visit, the Deputy Governor of the state, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta, emphasised the imperative use of life jackets for canoe users to ensure the safety of water transportation.

Welcomed by Christopher Sofore, the Chairman of Numan Local Government Area, Professor Keletapwa urged relevant agencies to guarantee the provision and adherence to life jacket usage, aiming to minimise the loss of lives and property in such unfortunate events.

Professor Keletapwa also advised stakeholders to promptly report such incidents to the police and other pertinent authorities.

The deputy governor assured that the state government would persist in formulating policies to enhance the safety of lives and property on waterways.

In an earlier briefing, Chairman Sofore informed the deputy governor that out of the 5 people on board, three were rescued, while a woman and her child remain missing.

Sofore disclosed that ongoing rescue and search efforts are underway to recover the bodies of the two missing individuals.
