National Assembly rejects judiciary budget, summons Minister, DG of Budget Office

The combined committee of the Nigerian National Assembly, representing the Senate and the House of Representatives, unanimously rejected the proposed budget for the judiciary during the plenary session on Wednesday.

In response to the unsatisfactory allocation of funds to the Nigerian judiciary, the committee also issued a 24-hour summons to Senator Atiku Bagudu, the Minister of National Planning, and Ben Akabueze, the Director-General of the Budget Office, urging them to appear before the committee.

They argued that the current budget proposal undermines the independence and functional efficacy of the judiciary.

The proposed budget for the judiciary in 2024 includes a capital expenditure of N5.3 billion and a recurrent expenditure of N8.8 billion, as disclosed by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Lateef Fagbemi.

Mr. Fagbemi had previously presented the case for additional funding to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, emphasising the importance of adequate support for the Ministry in line with the administration’s plans for the justice sector.
