Researchers at UniAbuja receive £3 billion grant from donor agencies

The University of Abuja (UniAbuja) has announced that its researchers have secured over £3 billion in grants in 2023 after submitting applications to donor agencies for research grants.

The Vice-Chancellor of UniAbuja, Professor Abdul-Rasheed Na’allah, revealed this on Monday in Abuja during the award ceremony for researchers and authors.

Na’allah stated, “The 2023 grant of over £3 billion marks a significant improvement compared to the £1 billion secured in 2022.”

The Vice-Chancellor encouraged leading researchers to share their experiences with others, emphasising the importance of supporting each other to encourage greater participation in grant applications.

He said, “There is no world-class university without world scholars; we must continue to show this nation that a world-class university is achievable and we have achieved it.”

Na’allah urged scholars to focus on addressing Nigeria’s challenges such as insecurity and leadership issues through their research work. He also announced plans for the university to establish a youth leadership clinic to train young people for future leadership roles.

The university’s Centre for Sponsored Projects (CSP) Director, Professor Obiageli Nnodu, expressed gratitude for the growth of the centre under the vice-chancellor’s initiative, noting that the grants have contributed significantly to the university’s revenue.

In recognition of their achievements, a total of 54 researchers and authors were awarded in various categories, with the researchers receiving gold, silver, and bronze awards, and the authors achieving similar distinctions.

One of the awardees, Doctor Dike Orji, thanked the vice-chancellor and the university for their support and pledged to continue working towards the university’s research growth.
