EFCC uncovers N37 billion laundering in former minister Sadiya Umar-Farouk’s ministry
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has uncovered an alleged N37.17 billion ($92.8 million) laundered within the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs under former minister Sadiya Umar-Farouk.
According to an exclusive report by Sunday PUNCH, the funds were transferred from the Federal Government’s accounts to 38 different bank accounts linked to contractor James Okwete, who is accused of transferring N6.746 billion to Bureau De Change operators, withdrawing N540 million in cash, purchasing luxury cars worth N288.348 million, and acquiring luxury houses in Abuja and Enugu State for N2.195 billion.

Okwete, who is associated with 53 companies, reportedly used 47 of them to secure Federal Government contracts totaling N27.423 billion.
He is also linked to 143 bank accounts across 12 commercial banks. The ongoing probe alleges misuse of funds meant for the ministry’s initiatives.
In a related development, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called for transparency regarding suspects involved in the N2.67 billion school feeding program funds uncovered by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in 2020.
The EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, offered no confirmation or denial when contacted about the recent allegations. Human rights lawyer Tolu Babaleye expressed concerns over corruption under the Buhari government, calling for a thorough investigation.
Meanwhile, Chairman of Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre in Africa, Ezenwa Nwagwu, urged a comprehensive probe of all previous administrations, emphasizing the need for justice.
Despite calls for accountability, the EFCC remains tight-lipped on the matter, stating, “No comments on that.”
