FG issues new guidelines for date of birth changes on NIN database

In a new directive issued on Sunday, the Federal Government declared that individuals seeking to alter their date of birth on the National Identification Number (NIN) database must now furnish an electronic civil registration and vital statistics system, e-CRVS certificate from the National Population Commission (NPC).

This was released by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) through its official communication channel.

According to the revised instructions, applicants must present an e-CRVS certificate alongside other valid documents, including identification and a modification request letter addressed to the Commission’s Director General.

Previously, the process required only an affidavit and a payment of N15,000 for age adjustments and other modifications on the NIN system.

But with the new guidelines, individuals can modify their date of birth only once in a lifetime, and this can exclusively be done at NIMC enrolment centres.

NIMC emphasised that licensed agents are strictly prohibited from making alterations to dates of birth and implementing other modifications.

The commission aims to enhance the accuracy and reliability of the NIN database by introducing these additional measures.

The update of guidelines comes in the wake of the recent directive by Nigerian telecommunications operators, setting February 28, 2024, as the deadline to disconnect Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs) not linked to the National Identity Number.

The directive is part of government’s effort to ensure a comprehensive integration of the NIN into various databases for security and identification purposes.
