How final-year student died while trying to retrieve girlfriend’s handbag

The Bauchi State Police Command has shared new details regarding the death of a 500-level Geology student of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Joseph Agabaidu.

Agabaidu passed away in the hospital after he was allegedly stabbed by criminals trying to snatch his mobile phone.

Giving insights to the unfortunate incident, the Police Command in a statement by Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Wakil, said the late student was attempting to retrieve his girlfriend’s handbag from unidentified assailants.

Wakil added that when the deceased tried to retrieve the bag, the criminals stabbed him on the side of his chest. He later died while on admission at the ATBU Teaching Hospital.

The incident understandably led to a protest by students at the Yelwa Campus, who were distressed by the lack of security in and around the campus.

The school management, in a statement by Deputy Registrar (Academic), Fatima Abdullahi, shut down the institution and directed students to immediately vacate the campus.

The police have confirmed that they are actively investigating the case and are committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice.
