Israeli Foreign Minister condemns UN Chief, Guterres, calls his tenure a “Danger to World Peace” over Gaza ceasefire move

In a statement borne out of desperation on Wednesday, Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen criticized UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, declaring his tenure a “danger to world peace.”

The condemnation followed Guterres’ commendable move to activate Article 99 and appeal to the Security Council for a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict.  Taking to X, formerly Twitter, Cohen accused Guterres of indirectly supporting the Hamas “terrorist” organization through his call for a ceasefire. The Israeli Foreign Minister emphasized his concerns about the implications of Guterres’ actions on the ongoing conflict.

The invocation of Article 99, a seldom-used provision in the UN Charter, reflects the escalating tensions surrounding the Gaza war, where Israel has faced international criticism for civilian casualties, including a significant number of children.  Guterres’ call for a ceasefire has stirred controversy, with Cohen’s statement adding fuel to the diplomatic fire.

The international community awaits further developments as the UN and Israel navigate the complexities of the situation in the region.
