Journalist advocates for deeper understanding of PWDs through thorough reporting
During a training session at Neptune Network Nigeria Limited’s head office in Abuja, seasoned journalist Hamza Ibrahim Muhammad emphasised the significance of thorough reporting when it comes to covering Persons With Disabilities (PWDs).
Drawing from his recent investigation into the lives of PWDs in Kaduna State, Hamza recounted a poignant encounter with a formerly beggar-turned-welder.
Upon spotting the resilient welder, Hamza parked his car and initiated a direct conversation, steering away from the conventional approach of seeking information from others.

The once-begging artisan shared his remarkable journey, detailing his transition from begging to mastering the welding skill, enabling him to support his family.
Hamza urged people to create an environment where individuals, especially those with disabilities, feel at ease sharing their stories. He stressed the need to discard assumptions and exercise patience, discouraging the lens of pity when interacting with PWDs.
In order to report on PWDs, it’s crucial to discard assumptions and exercise patience when interacting with them. Often times, people tend to view PWDs through a lens of pity, which can be disempowering and demeaning.
By treating PWDs with respect and creating an environment where they feel comfortable sharing their stories, journalists can provide a more accurate and nuanced portrayal of their experiences, Hamza added.
