Late Malam Kahtan Alwan Hashim: We surrender to the wills of the Supreme Being!, by Usman
Today, I honour and pay tribute to a truly remarkable soul we lost yesterday – the late Malam Kahtan Alwan Hashim, whose departure has left a profound void in our lives. As we reflect on his legacy, we are reminded of a man whose dedication to the field of chemistry, transcended the classroom, touching the lives of many, including my own.
Malam Kahtan was not just an educator; he was a beacon of knowledge and inspiration to us as undergraduates. The course he taught me in 200 level; Structure and Bonding was more than a subject—it was a transformative journey that ignited a passion for chemistry within me. Under his guidance, I not only learned the intricacies of the course and score above 90%, but also witnessed the true artistry of teaching. 15 years on, I still apply his teaching approach in imparting knowledge to others.
During my tenure as the secretary general of the Students Chemical Society of Nigeria, KUST Wudil, I had the privilege of working closely with Malam. As the Head of Department, he played a pivotal role in fostering an environment of academic excellence and camaraderie. His leadership was characterised by a perfect blend of wisdom and warmth, making every student feel valued.
Beyond the classroom, Malam Kahtan extended his influence as the chairman of the university’s senate committee on utility. His commitment to enhancing the overall welfare and educational experience of the students was evident in his tireless efforts to improve campus facilities and infrastructure. Notably, he could personally engage with students, addressing issues related to water and electricity supply by going room by room, exemplifying his commitment to their well-being.
My last conversation with Malam was a telephone call which remains etched in my memory. His commendation and heartfelt prayers for me reflected not only his professional pride in his students but also his genuine care for our well-being. In that moment, I felt the weight of his influence and the enduring impact he had on my life.
My heartfelt condolences go out to the family, friends, colleagues and associates of the late Malam Kahtan Alwan Hashim. In this time of profound loss, may you find strength in the memories you shared, comfort in the impact he made, and solace in the legacy he leaves behind.
To my own kind, his students, as we bid farewell to a beloved mentor, let us carry forward the torch of knowledge that Malam lit for each of us. May his legacy inspire future generations to pursue excellence in education, just as he did with unwavering passion and dedication.
Rest in peace, Malam. May Almighty Allah forgive all your wrongdoings and grant you eternal bliss in his exalted paradise.
